Energy Care Canada Home Services Inc. converts a suitable storage-tank water heater connected to a hydronic air handler into a tankless water heater and hydronic air handler system. The visit is scheduled at your address. Not every home is a candidate. The existing equipment, gas supply, venting, water piping, and ductwork are reviewed before any conversion is planned.
Domestic hot water and space heating in one system
A tankless water heater heats water as it is needed. For space heating, hot water from that heater circulates through a hydronic heating coil inside the air handler. The air handler blower moves household air across the coil and out through the home’s forced-air ductwork. The same tankless heater also supplies hot water to taps and showers. Sizing looks at both heating load and hot-water use so the equipment matches the home.
Depending on the equipment and control configuration, domestic hot water may take priority over space heating while fixtures are in use.
Space-saving design
A wall-mounted tankless water heater can take the place of the storage tank that supplies the hydronic air handler. In a basement or mechanical room, that can free floor space the tank occupied. Placement still depends on venting, gas supply, water lines, and the ductwork.
Integrated heating and hot water
Heating and domestic hot water are planned together. The hydronic air handler delivers warmed air through the ducts, while the tankless water heater supplies water for the fixtures and for the heating coil inside the air handler.
Potential efficiency improvements
A current tankless water heater and a matched hydronic air handler can use energy more effectively than an older storage-tank water heater. How much changes depends on the models selected, the condition of the ductwork, and how the home uses heat and hot water.
System components
The final list is confirmed for the home. A typical conversion includes:
Tankless water heater
Heats water on demand for the fixtures and for the heating coil inside the air handler.
Hydronic air handler
The blower moves air through the ductwork. A hydronic heating coil inside the air handler transfers heat from the circulating water into the airstream.
Air-conditioning evaporator coil
An evaporator coil can be installed above the air handler so the duct system can provide cooling when it is connected to a properly matched outdoor air conditioner. Cooling comes from that air-conditioning system. The tankless water heater does not produce cooling.
Piping and circulator
Carry heated water between the tankless heater and the heating coil inside the air handler.
Forced-air ductwork
Distributes warmed air through the home. Existing ducts are used when they are suitable.
Venting, gas supply, and controls
Connect the equipment and let the thermostat call for heat.
Conversion process
Home assessment
We check the existing storage-tank water heater, hydronic air handler, AC coil if present, mechanical space, gas supply, venting, water piping, and ductwork.
Load and demand review
Heat-loss calculations and hot-water demand guide the equipment choice.
Equipment selection
The tankless water heater and hydronic air handler are chosen for that home and confirmed before installation.
Installation
The new equipment is set, connected to water, gas, venting, and ducts, and tied into the heating controls.
Startup
We run the system and check heating and domestic hot water operation before the visit is complete.
Installation considerations
Equipment selection depends on heat-loss calculations, hot water demand, gas supply, venting, ductwork, and local code requirements. A conversion proceeds only when those conditions support it. Scope and equipment are confirmed before work begins.
Not every tankless water heater is compatible with a hydronic air handler. The equipment must be manufacturer-approved for the intended configuration, with appropriate circulation, piping, water quality, and backflow protection, and it must comply with the applicable codes.
Maintenance
Scheduled service can include inspection of the tankless water heater, the hydronic air handler and its heating coil, the air filter, venting, and controls. If an air-conditioning evaporator coil is installed, it can be inspected during the same visit. Descaling is included when water conditions call for it. Regular maintenance helps the system keep operating efficiently and reliably.
